Permaculture—once a niche movement rooted in the ecological observations of the 1970s—has long been associated with back-to-the-land idealism, labour-intensive practices, and a rejection of industrial agriculture. But in a world where instant gratification is the norm, attention spans are shrinking, and climate change demands urgent action, does permaculture still have a place? Or is it a relic of a bygone era, incompatible with the fast-paced, digital-first lifestyles of today?
The answer isn’t a simple yes or no. Permaculture is neither obsolete nor universally applicable in its original form. Instead, it’s evolving—a philosophy and practice that must adapt to remain relevant. The challenge lies in making permaculture accessible and practical for a generation that expects solutions at the swipe of a finger.
I believe we can bridge the gap between permaculture’s roots and the realities of the modern world.
